Being an only child gets lonely. Those who grew up with siblings say I'm lucky because I didn't have to share or be bossed around, but it also meant spending most of the day at home in my own company.
In fourth grade, a girl in class mentioned something about online pets. I was intrigued. I made her write down the name of the website in my notebook.
At home, I tentatively turned on the computer and typed it in. I customized a pet: shy but not unfriendly, quiet, nerdy, loves to read.
Retrospectively I can tell that the pet I had created was not just a mini-me, but had the personality of someone that would understand
More often than not, I felt like an outsider growing up.
But here was a kindred spirit.
More than that, here was a friend.
